Last night, after I spat yet another creative slur about the driving skills of the person in the car in front of me, a demure little voice from the back seat said, "That's not the holiday spirit."
I thought I was hearing things until I remembered that both my son and daughter were in the car, and judging by my son's intonation, he was doing his very best Tiny Tim impression and I, apparently, was Scrooge. I attempted a quick and "spirited" recovery, mumbling something about the "silly" driver who probably ate "so many candy canes" that his "happy feet" stuck to the brakes and gas pedal. Then I think I broke into a dramatic rendition of I'm Dreaming of a White Christmas in falsetto and my kids rolled their eyes.
Ah...the holidays.
There's just so much stress and chaos - most of which is self-induced, completely unnecessary, and certainly, not conducive to "the holiday spirit" at all.
But then a friend forwards you an email - the kind you're likely to delete before opening - except this time you don't. You watch the video, and suddenly the black cloud of gifts and menus and cleaning and cards swirling in your head evaporates.
I feel it. (Finally!)
Have a great holiday, everyone. Peace and love and good health to you all.

I recently came across your blog and have been reading along. I thought I would leave my first comment. I don't know what to say except that I have enjoyed reading. Nice blog. I will keep visiting this blog very often.

I allow my children to slap my hand whenever I call another driver a moron. (Note the correct spelling.) My hand is often as red as Santa's suit.
Here's to a better spirit, year-round!
Made me cry!!
Aw, Susan left that EXACT same comment on my blog. She loves us all.
Thanks for sharing the video, Ruth!
Peace and holiday wishes to you, too!
Mark
Have you read Kelly Corrigan's book?
The Middle Way, I think it's called.
It's really good.
Thinking of you...
Best of the season to you, my friend.
xo,
J
I'm wowed by Kelly's writing, but mostly just reminded of how much, how very deeply I miss you. You, and Suebob, and Jess - you're my blogging sisters.
It is truly an honor.
Me, I'm neither here nor there this season. I just ... am.
